RECANTO DA RIBEIRA - CASAS DE CAMPO

O “Recanto da Ribeira – Casas de Campo” consists of a unit of Tourism in Rural Areas composed of 4 traditional houses and a Medronho Aguardente distillery, all recently renovated. The building techniques followed the rules of the past (with walls using the rammed earth technique, wooden ceilings and some components in shale) but always with today’s comforts in mind. These houses have been in the family for generations and were in bygone days a tavern (venda) and a fabric and textile store. The names of the houses are a direct reference to the art of distilling Medronho and adopted names associated with this craft: Alambique (The Still), Caldeira (The Boiler), Pilão (Tank full of cold water where the vapours liquefy) and Fornalha (The Furnace). These 4 houses, located by the small river Ribeira de Seixe (a natural border between the Alentejo and the Algarve)
in the Foz do Besteiro hamlet, are the ideal place to rest and enjoy the natural environment. The splash of water from the stream, the croaking of the frogs and the singing of the birds are the soundtrack played every day at Recanto da Ribeira.

From here you will be able to fully enjoy the Monchique Mountains, pop in to Odeceixe beach or merely go for a walk by the river. During the Medronho season, you can experience a unique event by attending the distilling process of this aromatic fruit and taste one of the most genuine Aguardentes from this area.

Each house is fully equipped and has bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and sitting area.

THE DISTILLERY

The Ribeira distillery is one of the most recent distilleries in the Marmelete community, in which the owner has installed two 120-litre boilers. The winery (as distilleries are known in these parts) has metal pilões, as is the rule, but are covered in wood to resemble those used in the past. In this winery it is possible to watch the distillation process of the Medronho paste as it has been done for generations and see how a genuine Medronho Aguardente from the Monchique Mountains is still slowly produced here.
